From Marrakesh to the World — The Story Behind La Maison Tamurt

La Maison Tamurt was founded in 2022 by Hamza, a Marrakesh native, and Moataz, his friend from Tunisia, who met in Vancouver and bonded over a shared appreciation for sustainable and traditional Berber art. The name Tamurt—“land” in Amazigh—reflects the origins of these handcrafted rugs and the Moroccan landscapes that inspire their designs: the mountains, deserts, and valleys where weaving traditions have been practiced for centuries.

Over the course of a year, Hamza and Moataz searched for a supplier who worked directly with artisans and paid them fairly, and maintained high standards of quality without compromising tradition. Their journey led them to Rabii’, an experienced professional in the Moroccan artisan community, introduced by Mulaakim, a long-time friend of Hamza and La Maison Tamurt’s representative in Marrakesh.

This dedication to finding the right partner stems from Hamza’s deep connection to Moroccan craftsmanship, which began with his grandfather. Starting as a tailor of traditional jalabas (Moroccan attire), his grandfather’s journey into rug-making took him across Morocco, where he discovered the rich diversity of regional weaving styles. Each region brought its own techniques, colors, and natural materials, weaving stories of the land into every piece.

Moataz shared this passion for traditional craftsmanship and brought a perspective that complemented Hamza’s vision. Together, they established La Maison Tamurt to share Moroccan weaving traditions with a broader audience while ensuring fair and respectful collaboration with artisans.

La Maison Tamurt connects the work of Moroccan artisans with people who value traditional techniques, thoughtful design, and cultural heritage. Each rug is a product of careful craftsmanship, designed to last and carry meaning beyond its function.
